About this China mainland eSIM

Heading to China mainland for about a week? This plan gives you 100 MB of data across 7 days for $0.48, paid once with no subscription behind it.

Spread evenly, that is about 14 MB a day. It is one pool for the whole 7 days rather than a daily cap, so a quiet day leaves more for a busy one.

This is a lean allowance, so it pays to prepare: download offline maps of China mainland before you leave, stop messaging apps from auto-downloading photos and videos, and turn off background app refresh. Kept for maps and messages, it goes a long way.

Per gigabyte it works out at $4.92/GB, or $0.07 per day of cover.

How far will 100 MB go?

Roughly what the plan covers, if you spend it all on one thing (in total):

Mapsabout 20 hours
Browsingabout 2 hours
Socialabout 20 minutes
Video callsabout 20 minutes
SD videoabout 9 minutes

Estimates only — real use depends on the app, the quality setting and the network. Downloading maps and playlists on Wi-Fi before you go stretches any plan much further.

Questions about this plan

Is 100 MB enough for 7 days in China mainland?

It is enough for maps, messaging and email, but tight for social media and too little for video. It works out at about 14 MB a day if spread evenly.

When does the 7 days validity start?

When the eSIM first connects to a network in China mainland, not when you buy it. So you can buy and install it before you travel without the clock starting.

What happens if I run out of data?

The eSIM stops using mobile data until you add more. You can buy more data in the Go2Calls app whenever you need it.

Will I keep my own phone number?

Yes. This eSIM carries data only. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and you choose which line uses mobile data.

Does it renew automatically?

No. It is a one-off purchase of $0.48. When the data or the 7 days run out, it simply ends — no card is kept on file to charge again.

How do I know my phone supports eSIM?

Most iPhones from the XS onward and most recent Android flagships do, but the phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look under Settings › General › About for "Digital SIM" or "Available SIM"; on Android, search Settings for "eSIM".

How to set it up

Buy the plan in the Go2Calls app and the eSIM is ready straight away. On your phone, add a new eSIM and scan the QR code the app shows you — on iPhone under Settings › Mobile Data › Add eSIM, on Android under Settings › Network › SIMs. When you arrive in China mainland, switch mobile data to the new eSIM and turn on data roaming for that line only. Your usual SIM keeps handling calls and texts.
