About this Japan eSIM

Heading to Japan for about a week? This plan gives you 12 GB of data across 4 days for $7.23, paid once with no subscription behind it.

Spread evenly, that is about 3 GB a day. It is one pool for the whole 4 days rather than a daily cap, so a quiet day leaves more for a busy one.

That is a generous allowance: enough to post videos, make regular video calls, or run your laptop off the phone as a hotspot for email and light work.

Per gigabyte it works out at $0.60/GB, or $1.81 per day of cover.

How far will 12 GB go?

Roughly what the plan covers, if you spend it all on one thing (in total):

Mapsabout 2,460 hours
Browsingabout 200 hours
Socialabout 41 hours
Video callsabout 41 hours
SD videoabout 18 hours

Estimates only — real use depends on the app, the quality setting and the network. Downloading maps and playlists on Wi-Fi before you go stretches any plan much further.

Questions about this plan

Is 12 GB enough for 4 days in Japan?

Yes, with room to spare for video and photo sharing. It works out at about 3 GB a day if spread evenly.

When does the 4 days validity start?

When the eSIM first connects to a network in Japan, not when you buy it. So you can buy and install it before you travel without the clock starting.

What happens if I run out of data?

The eSIM stops using mobile data until you add more. You can buy more data in the Go2Calls app whenever you need it.

Will I keep my own phone number?

Yes. This eSIM carries data only. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and you choose which line uses mobile data.

Does it renew automatically?

No. It is a one-off purchase of $7.23. When the data or the 4 days run out, it simply ends — no card is kept on file to charge again.

How do I know my phone supports eSIM?

Most iPhones from the XS onward and most recent Android flagships do, but the phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look under Settings › General › About for "Digital SIM" or "Available SIM"; on Android, search Settings for "eSIM".

How to set it up

Buy the plan in the Go2Calls app and the eSIM is ready straight away. On your phone, add a new eSIM and scan the QR code the app shows you — on iPhone under Settings › Mobile Data › Add eSIM, on Android under Settings › Network › SIMs. When you arrive in Japan, switch mobile data to the new eSIM and turn on data roaming for that line only. Your usual SIM keeps handling calls and texts.
