About this New Zealand eSIM

A short-stay plan for New Zealand: 1 GB/day of data for 1 day, at $1.58. It is sized for a stopover, a weekend or a quick business trip, when a full-length plan would mostly go unused.

The allowance is 1 GB/day every day and refreshes daily, so a busy day does not eat into tomorrow — across 1 day that is up to 1 GB in all.

That is a generous allowance: enough to post videos, make regular video calls, or run your laptop off the phone as a hotspot for email and light work.

How far will 1 GB/day go?

Roughly what each day's allowance covers, if you spend it all on one thing (each day):

Mapsabout 200 hours
Browsingabout 17 hours
Socialabout 3 hours
Video callsabout 3 hours
SD videoabout 1 hour

Estimates only — real use depends on the app, the quality setting and the network. Downloading maps and playlists on Wi-Fi before you go stretches any plan much further.

Questions about this plan

Is 1 GB/day enough for 1 day in New Zealand?

Yes, with room to spare for video and photo sharing. It works out at about 1 GB a day, and the allowance refreshes every day.

When does the 1 day validity start?

When the eSIM first connects to a network in New Zealand, not when you buy it. So you can buy and install it before you travel without the clock starting.

What does 1 GB/day mean?

You get 1 GB/day each day for 1 day. The allowance refreshes daily, so unused data does not carry over, and a heavy day does not take anything from the next. Fair use: 1 Mbps.

Will I keep my own phone number?

Yes. This eSIM carries data only. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and you choose which line uses mobile data.

Does it renew automatically?

No. It is a one-off purchase of $1.58. When the data or the 1 day run out, it simply ends — no card is kept on file to charge again.

How do I know my phone supports eSIM?

Most iPhones from the XS onward and most recent Android flagships do, but the phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look under Settings › General › About for "Digital SIM" or "Available SIM"; on Android, search Settings for "eSIM".

How to set it up

Buy the plan in the Go2Calls app and the eSIM is ready straight away. On your phone, add a new eSIM and scan the QR code the app shows you — on iPhone under Settings › Mobile Data › Add eSIM, on Android under Settings › Network › SIMs. When you arrive in New Zealand, switch mobile data to the new eSIM and turn on data roaming for that line only. Your usual SIM keeps handling calls and texts.
